Teaching Grammar the Easy Way

Shurley Grammar is the only grammar curriculum that I can recommend with good conscience. In my 16 years of homeschooling my four children, this is the easiest grammar that we ever used.

Why do I like Shurley Grammar?

It's easy to use. The book is divided up into five weekly lessons. You simply follow along and do lesson one on Monday, lesson two on Tuesday, etc.

It has clear instructions. Each lesson has a "teacher's script" that works as a grammar lesson plan and makes teaching grammar easy. You know exactly what to say. If you have the time, you can read over the "script" before teaching your children, if not, just read as you go.

It's fun. This grammar program has "jingles" for the kids to sing for each part of speech. When your children are young and just beginning to learn grammar - this is great. They love it.

Now, if your children are older, I would just skip singing the jingles - they aren't going to like it. They will still get the benefit of this program and become "grammar experts" without singing the jingles.

It is logical. Shurley Grammar is taught logically and systematically. I think this is one of the many reasons this is such a great program. It just makes sense and everyone "gets it" - the kids and the moms.

When I first started teaching my children - I didn't know what a preposition was. Now I can classify sentenses like an expert. More importantly - so can my children.

I could go on and on.

Shurley Grammar is the best grammar curriculum on the market and I don't recommend anything else. There are 6 levels and have a special home school edition.

Materials for each of the 6 grade levels are sold in a kit package. A kit contains everything needed to teach one child for an entire school year. Each kit contains the following 3 items:

Teacher's Manual: The teacher's manual is the heart of the program at every grade level.

There are 5 lessons per chapter which makes putting together your grammar lesson plan a snap. Each lesson opens with a planning box, which contains the lesson objectives.

The scripted lessons provide you with the exact words for the Question & Answer Flows, questioning strategies, and the teaching techniques that make this program consistent for all grade levels. The script is especially helpful for parents who are new to homeschooling or Shurley English and it makes teaching grammar easy.

Each chapter can be finished in one week. A lesson takes approximately 20-45 minutes to complete.

Grammar, language skills, and writing are taught in each chapter.

Student Workbook: Levels 1-6 use workbooks rather than traditional textbooks for your child to practice and test their acquired knowledge and skills. Special emphasis is placed on parent-child interaction and performance.

Each workbook contains a Jingle Section, a Reference Section, a Practice Section, and a Test Section.

The Jingle Section contains all the jingles.

The Reference Section includes vocabulary words, guided practices, samples, guidelines, and charts.

The Practice Section provides extra practice on the various skills taught before the skills are tested.

The Test Section contains the tests for each chapter. Each test is divided into 4 basic areas: grammar, vocabulary, language skills, and a summary of the things learned for the week.
