Reading Problem Question

I am having trouble with my 9 year old son. He can read but only a little. He forgets so easily and gets really upset when he can't remember the word.

I just need some advice on how to make it easier for him and some tricks or things you have done that will make his reading improve. I will do whatever it takes to help him. Thank You

Reading Problem
by: Anonymous

Hi,

I understand how you feel. By the second grade, my daughter still had to sound out every word. She would sound out C...A...T...cat. Two words later, it was like she had never seen the word before and would sound it out again, and again, and again. My point is, your son sounds a lot like her.

For my daughter, it took using Abeka reading. We did their full reading program and I followed it step-by-step -- twice a day -- every day. It was a lot of work, but it was successful.

Your son is obviously upset over the problem. I would try a very basic cut and dry program. He's old enough that he doesn't want any cute little kiddie program. That will only make him feel stupid and embarrass him.

Try a program like Abeka or Phonics Tutor. You can find the Phonics Tutor program at Timberdoodle.com (http://www.timberdoodle.com/Phonics_Tutor_CD_Rom_Windows_p/042-142.htm). This program is for older children who can't read or that need remedial work.

Since reading is a struggle for your son, right now, I wouldn't try reading games. I think it would only emphasize the problem and make him feel worse.

Stick with a good solid reading program. Your son knows he has a reading problem so don't try to brush it off like it's not a big deal. On the other hand, don't let him know it bothers you.

Explain that we're all different, and we all have our strong and weak points. One of the great things about homeschooling is that you have the time to devote one-on-one attention to reading with your son. Together you'll work it out.

After trying one of these programs and giving it all you've got plus getting your son to relax about it, if he still has problems in another year, I would start looking for a specialist.

I hope this helps,
Debbie Proctor
