Need preschool curriculum ideas for teaching colors, shapes, and sizes to preschoolers?

Here is some helpful information before you take on the job of teaching your little guys their colors, shapes, and sizes.

Teaching Colors to Preschoolers

Always remember to start slowly and always keep it fun and light. Begin by introducing one color at a time beginning with the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue. Follow these three colors with the secondary colors of green, orange, and purple. Finally, introduce black, brown, white, and pink.

Here are some preschool curriculum ideas for teaching colors. It is not necessary for your preschooler to "master" the colors before you move on, just be sure and review frequently.

1. Play games using colors. Some good games are:

Color Bingo, Candyland, Color Concentration

2. Match the color of objects or pictures to a color card or place items on a piece of colored construction paper.

3. Make a game of collecting objects that are the same color. Start with concret objects (objects that the child can physically pick up like a toy car or top) and move topictures of objects of certain colors.

4. Ask your preschooler to name items that are related to color - red = apple, yellow = sun

Teaching Size to Preschoolers

One of the hardest concepts for preschoolers to grasp is that size is relative. In other words, an egg is bigger than a marble but is smaller than a basketball. Here are some preschool curriculum ideas to teach size to your preschooler.

1. Let your child compare objects to herself. "This tree is bigger than me." "My puppy is smaller than me."

2. Slowly begin introducing middle size objects after she has a firm grasp on relative sizes.

3. Let your child sort objects from smallest to biggest and biggest to smallest.

4. Read books that have size in them such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Teaching Shapes to Preschoolers

Don't underestimate the importance of learning shapes. By learning the names of shapes and recognizing them, you are preparing your preschooler for reading readiness. Recognizingshapes is preparation to recognizing the letters of the alphabet.

1. Sorting - Buy a set of manipulatives that have all the geometric shapes. Let your child sort them according to shape. Start by laying out two different shapes and let them sort them into piles.

2. Next your child should be able to recognize properties of a shape so they can sort shapes even when they are a different size or color.

In other words, he should be able to recognize that triangles have three sides and the fact that it doesn't matter if it is a big triangle, small triangle, red triangle, or blue triangle.

3. Have your child find examples of shapes that surround her. "The mirror is round." "The table is a rectangle."
