new to homeschooling

by Rose
(Georgia)

I am new to homeschooling and am starting to set up our classroom in what was our play room.

I have the desks, etc, but I am nervous about getting the children to do the work. I am a mom of bbg triplets and am worried that they will think it is play time.

How do I get them to focus on their actual work and not play?

How to Homeschool
by: Debbie

Hi Rose,

I think all moms are a little bit nervous when they first start homeschooling. I know I was.

All kinds of worries run through your mind:

Will I be able to teach?
Will they learn?
Am I making a mistake?
What if I mess up my children? :)
Will they do what I tell them?

So first realize that your nervousness is perfectly normal. To tell you the truth, I'm a little nervous myself at the beginning of each school year and look how long I've been doing this.

As for getting your children to do their work, your situation is actually no different than any homeschool mom with more than one child.

Here's what I recommend, and hopefully other moms will chime in and give you their opinion also.

Begin the schoolyear very structured. Set a schedule and stick to it. For example, my children are expected to be up by 7:00am and have chores done, dressed, and eaten breakfast by 8:30am.

At 8:30...we start school.

I do have certain rules that have been in place in our house forever such as during school hours - no video games - no computer (non-school work) - no TV.

My kids know to ask me each time they finish a particular subject - "What do I do next?" Of course this was when they were younger. Now they can look at the lesson plan sheet and see what they can move on to next.

So my recommendation to you would be to set a schedule and stick to it. Make the rules known about no playing until all schoolwork is done or during certain "break" times.

The most important thing is for you to make the rules and stick to them. If they ever learn that they can "play you", they won't take you serious and soon the day will be total chaos.

Hope this helps!
