List of Prepositions

Preposition Games to Make Learning Fun!

When you first look at the list of prepositions, it seems almost impossible for anyone to learn them, much less children.

Don't worry, learning all 49 of the list of prepositions isn't impossible. Just use some of these preposition games and activities to teach prepositions and your kids will have them down pat in no time.

Memory Match

This is the typical memory game that has been around for ages. I have used this game over and over in my 16 years of homeschooling my kids because you can use it for any subject.

To make this game, get some index cards and write each of the prepositions on two cards. For example, if you're going to teach all 49 prepositions (and you should), you would have 98 cards.

Now when you teach prepositions, don't start with the entire list of prepositions at one time.

Start with 5-10 according to the age of your child. Once they've mastered these, add some more until they know all 49.

If you're going to start out teaching 10 prepositions, you should lay down 20 cards face down on the table.

The children can play this by themselves or with another sibling.

The child turns over one card and leaves it face up.

He then turns over another card trying to match the preposition that was on the first card.

If the prepositions don't match, he turns both cards over and tries again.

Play continues like this until he has matched all the cards. This is a fun and easy preposition game that kids like to play.

Hangman

This game is played just like it was when you were a child.

One player picks a card with a preposition on it from the list of prepositions. He draws the hangman's stand and draws empty spaces below the stand for however many letters there are in the preposition.

The second player guesses a letter.

If the letter is in the word, the first player writes it in the correct blank space.

If the letter isn't in the word, he draws the head of the body being hung.

The next time the second player misses, he draws a line for the body etc. until the whole body is drawn and the second player is out.

If you don't like the idea of "hanging" somebody, choose a less-violent variation and draw a daisy (with a pre-determined number of petals).

Charades

Kids have fun learning their list of prepositions with preposition games like this one because it's a chance to be learning while not having to sit still.

To teach prepositions, write all of the prepositions on slips of paper.

Fold the pieces of paper in half and put in a bowl, bag, or hat (whatever you have handy).

The kids take turns drawing a slip of paper and then acting out what their preposition is.

They are allowed to use props. For example: "Underneath" The child could crawl underneath the coffeetable. "Up" The child could toss something (ball) up.

Games like this one helps to get the "wiggles" out of your kids and they're learning at the same time.

Writing

If your children are older or they like to write, have your child write a paragraph or story using as many words on the list prepositions in it as possible. Be sure and tell them they can make it as silly as they want. Have them underline each preposition in the story.

Drawing

Have budding artists? Let them draw pictures that demonstrate as many prepositions as possible. Make a book with a picture showing one preposition per page. This makes a great keepsake and something to show doubting relatives. :)

As I find more games and remember more that we played throughout the years, I'll post them in the games section. Be sure and check back frequently or just click on the RSS feed button in the left-hand side of this page and you'll be notified anytime I add something new.
