Kids Bible Study Curriculum

And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:52

A good kids Bible study curriculum is of utmost importance to homeschooling.

It is my personal belief that the heart of your homeschool adventure should be teaching your children about God and training them to grow up to be Godly men and women of faith.

A good education is important, but the bottom line is that if your children don't have a saving faith in God, they have nothing.

kids bible study Let me tell you a story...

One day, I was feeling sorry for myself.

I was tired, burned out, and just generally overworked - sound familiar???? I had been trying to clean, feed kids, teach kids and take care of the babies and...

I was sick. Nothing serious, just one of those rotten colds. The kids were "running amuck" :) the toddler was making a mess and the baby was crying.

So I escaped.

I put the baby in the stroller, told the kids to watch the toddler and went for a walk. As I started walking and feeling like I did ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING in the world ALL BY MYSELF (I was really feeling sorry for myself) I thought, "What would they all do if I died?"

This is a sobering thought. I quickly quit feeling sorry for myself and thought, "What WOULD they do if something happened to me? What would be the most important thing I would need to teach my children if I knew I was no longer going to be around?"

It didn't take me long to realize that ONE THING is a saving knowledge of God. To really know Jesus as their Savior. To know the Bible. To have a relationship with the Holy Spirit and be led to be Godly men and women.

This was the defining moment when I knew that the most important part of our home school was God. Everything else comes second.

If they're math whizzes - great.

If they can win a spelling bee - great.

If they can recite every historically significant date since the beginning of time - great.

All of these things are great, but not if they don't know God.

Put Him first and everything else will fall in place.

PRESCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN KIDS BIBLE STUDY CURRICULUM

I used

16927: The Word & Song CD Pack, 5 CDsThe Word & Song CD Pack, 5 CDs
with all four of my children at bedtime for a kids bible study and they loved it. It has 116 Bible stories that go through the Bible in order and then there are 70 scripture songs that help reinforce the Bible verses.

kids bible study The stories are read by people like Max Lucado, Steve Green, Larnelle Harris, Twila Paris, Joni Eareckson Tada, and Reggie White. The songs are sung by the Wonder Kids Choir and are well-done and have "catchy" tunes.

My kids looked forward to this every night at bedtime.

First we would look at the book while we listened to the story. Then we sang a couple of songs and said prayers. It was a good routine that worked for us, but of course, you could start your day off with this too.

I used

241379: ABC Memory Verses (K-3)ABC Memory Verses (K-3)
for a kids bible study when my kids got just a little bit older. When I used it with my kids, all that was included was a coloring page for each memory verse that we turned into a book for each child (that I still have).

We liked it just like it was, but they have improved it even more by including games, songs, and memory tips. It also has a progress chart with 300 stickers that little kids would love.

I think all kids need to learn the "classic" little kids Bible songs.

060320: Cedarmont Kids: Action Bible Songs Valu-Pak, CD and DVDCedarmont Kids: Action Bible Songs Valu-Pak, CD and DVD
has 17 Bible action songs that teaches the movements so your little bittys can dance their little hearts out while they are learning fun Bible songs. Here are the songs:

Full song listing: "Zacchaeus," "Isn't He Wonderful," "Happy All the Time," "O Be Careful Little Eyes," "Jesus Bids Us Shine," "I'm in the Lord's Army," "If You're Happy," "Rise and Shine (Arky, Arky)," "Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain," "Jesus Loves the Little Ones," "Father Abraham," "One Door and Only One," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "His Banner Over Me Is Love," "This Little Light of Mine," "Behold, Behold," and "Onward Christian Soldiers."

CD1686: Hide "Em in Your Heart: Praise & Worship for Kids, Compact Disc [CD]Hide 'Em in Your Heart: Praise & Worship for Kids
was the CD (it was a cassette back then) that we listened to whenever we had to go anywhere in the car.

These are actual scriptures that has been put to nice music. The songs are nice but still fun to sing so the kids sing along and while they're singing, they memorize without really realizing it! Put good music like this on or good books on CD whenever you're in the car instead of listening to music that isn't so good.

KIDS BIBLE STUDY CURRICULUM for GRADES 1-3

The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones is a storybook that your children will enjoy. You can use this for several years by reading it to them until they become good readers and then let them read from it every day when they are ready.

kids bible study I like to start my children reading from the Bible every day to train them and teach them that Bible reading is to be an every day activity. While this isn't an actual Bible, it is true to scripture and tells the Bible stories along with wonderful pictures that the kids like so it makes a good kids bible study.

Another option is The Big Picture Story Bible. This book is great because it doesn't make heroes out of Biblical people. Yes, we need to look to Noah, David, Joshua as role models, but we don't need to forget or to teach our children what the real focus of the Bible is.

This book has a story line that shows how a glorious God keeps His promise of salvation. After your children have been saturated with that awesome message, turn to a children's Bible to fill in all the details.

KIDS BIBLE STUDY CURRICULUM for GRADES 4-6

For grades four and up, I highly recommend a set of books called Balancing the Sword Allen B. Wolfe. This is a two-set Bible study program and is a great kids Bible study that takes you through the Bible, word for word, twice.

My kids and I are currently working through this set. Every day, we read four chapters of the Bible, answer and discuss the questions that go with every chapter.

I don't care how many times you've read the Bible. Balancing the Sword will make you slow down and really think about what you are reading. By working through this kids Bible study program with your kids, you KNOW they are getting it. As old as my children are (12, 14, 18), I read the Bible to them and we answer the questions together outloud.

You, of course, are free to do the program however you see fit, but this gives us "close" time and I know my kids are really paying attention and listening to the Bible...priceless!

Balancing the Sword comes with several different reading plans so you can find one that fits your family and is appropriate for the age of your children. You can also read the Bible to your younger children and answer the questions together, so you really can adapt this to all age groups.

Balancing the Sword is two beautifully made volumes with 589 pages each and a total of 7,000 questions. There is a question for approximately every 2.7 Bible verses, so you can see how thorough this study is.

kids bible study I love it because it is a serious kids Bible study that can be adapted for all ages, family study or independent study, and can be used over and over. BTS is designed to give you a comprehensive working knowledge of what the Bible actually says and that is exactly what it does...Love it!

You know I love reading to my kids, so of course one of the things I love reading to them about is real life missionary stories. Here are some we have really enjoyed that you can read aloud or have your kids read during their daily reading time.

The Jungle Doctor & The Jungle Doctor II

These sets each have six books about Paul White. He was born in 1910 and was an extraordinary Australian missionary who labored several years as a physician in the African nation of Tanzania. The Jungle Doctor series is based on his experiences working in the bush and recounts the struggles of providing medicine in a primitive colonial hospital.

Ten Girls Who...

These books are written especially to inspire our girls to become what God truly meant them to be.

It's hard for girls these days.

The world tells them to be one thing and the Bible tells them another. Of course, they should obviously do what the Bible says, but these books give them real-life examples of girls who lived their faith and inspire our daughters to do likewise.

Ten Girls Who Didn't Give In tells the stories of Blandina, Lysken Dirks, Betty Stam, and other martyred reformation women or missionaries.

Ten Girls Who Changed the World includes the childhoods of Amy Carmichael, Corrie Ten Boom, and Gladys Aylward.

Ten Girls Who Made a Difference highlights the early days of some of the wives and mothers of great men, like Katherine Luther, Sabina Wurmbrand, and Susanna Wesley.

Ten Girls Who Made History recounts the youth of such notables as Elisabeth Elliot, Betty Green, Lottie Moon, and more.

Each book is 160 pages long and concludes each chapter with interesting facts, keynotes, and something to think about.

Ten Boys Who...

This is the companion series to the "Ten Girls Who..." mentioned above except they are for boys. These books are equally good.

Ten Boys Who Made a Difference

Ten Boys Who Changed the World

Ten Boys Who Used Their Talents

Ten Boys Who Didn't Give In

Ten Boys Who Made History

These are great for your boys to read. Inspiring stories that are fun and interesting, yet encourage and set good examples for your men-in-training!

KIDS BIBLE STUDY CURRICULUM for GRADES 7 & 8 and HIGH SCHOOL

My first pick for a comprehensive kids Bible Study for these age groups is Balancing the Sword by Allen B. Wolfe. See the review above in the Grades 4-5 section to see why.

Foxe ~ Voices of the Martyrs

This book is a classic that tells about men and women who voluntarily suffered death for refusing to renounce Christ. It can be graphic and gory, but...I think it's important for our children to understand the concept of "giving their all" for Christ.

kids bible study They need to know that "giving your all" isn't just "lip service" but that people in the past and today have done and are still doing this. I think this is a very inspiring book written in 1563 by John Foxe. He recorded stories of those who died for Jesus. Wonderful.

Jesus Freaks -- Martyrs and Jesus Freaks: Revolutionaries Volume II: Stories of Revolutionaries Who Changed Their World

These are two more books that tell about Christian Martyrs. My children loved these books and read them for themselves after I read the books to them. There is also an accompanying book called Live Like a Jesus Freak that is a good Bible study for this age group.

As you start your home school or continue what you have already started, please take time to consider what I have said.

Always make God the focus of your homeschool ~ Nothing is more important than God!

Use this free kids bible study sheet as a guide to teaching your children the Bible.
