Homeschooling Laws

Homeschooling laws may be boring...but they're important.

Although home schooling is and has always been legal according to the Constitution of the United States, to keep your state and local officials happy, you need to make sure you are following the laws they have set up for teaching your children at home.

For most of the states, these requirements aren't difficult at all - usually just a matter of filing some paperwork, but to be on the safe side, check.

Your covering should also be able to tell you everything you need to do to make your home school legal and will tell you when you sign up with them.

Be sure and read the article"/a> Good Rules to Follow for some tips on staying on the good side of local officials.

Homeschooling Laws by State

The best source for checking the laws in your state is through HSLDA.

One organization that you need to be familiar with when you become a homeschool family is Home School Legal Defense Association. HSLDA is a nonprofit organization that offers legal assistance to homeschool families when their legal rights are being challenged. When you join and pay the annual fee, they will defend your family should your legal home schooling rights ever be challenged.

You need to read their complete description of what they offer and their explanation of qualifying for legal defense, but I highly recommend joining this group. Basically, they pool all of the membership fees and use that money to for legal and court costs to defend homeschool families.
