Homeschool Science Curriculum
Teaching your children science is FUN! There are all sorts of different homeschool science curriculum and teaching methods that you can follow, but the bottom line is... make it fun...
make it interesting...make it a time for exploration... Before you choose your homeschool science curriculum read my articles on
"Getting Your Kids to Love Homeschool Science"
and "Science Lesson Plans," then come back to this page and read my curriculum reviews for different science programs. Fun...Fun...Fun!!! Obviously - I think science for this age group should be especially fun!
First, I recommend any books by DK Publishing and Eyewitness Readers. You won't ever find better and more detailed pictures and kids love them! Whether the book is about animals, earth science, or machines, the picture and text is great. It is well worth your money to stock up on these books, because your children will look at them and eventually read them over....and over...and over. Thames & Kosmos Little Labs - Stepping into Science. This is an all-in-one kit that covers five areas of science and is a great homeschool science curriculum - - nature
- physics
- chemistry
- air
- water
It comes with a 48-page guidebook and teaches science fundamentals with hands-on experiments. I like this because it isn't expensive and combined with good reading books like the Eyewitness and DK Publishing books will make a complete and fun curriculum. (not for kids under 3yrs) Frog Dominoes This set of dominoes teaches not only the life cycle of frogs and butterflies, but also matching and puzzle building. Just because it's a game, doesn't mean that it can't be considered a part of your homeschool science curriculum. Janice VanCleave's ~ Teaching the Fun of Science to Young Learners I recommend any book by Janice VanCleave. She has fun science projects for kids and experiments that you can do with everyday, household objects. This book answers common questions "little bittys" ask. There are 75 lessons on fundamental skills including observation, measuring and estimating, grouping, and investigating. Our Father's World By David Arwine and Michael McHugh This is a great book to have - great photography - 108 pages that teach about how God made everything - seasons, animals, insects, people, plants. You read this book and look at the pictures with your child and then ask the provided questions and do the activities. There are Bible verses throughout that allow your children to read the words of God that relate to the subject being studied. I like all of our curriculum to be God-centered but especially our homeschool science curriculum. Go Science -- My Senses Body Awarness Science Kit ~ This is another kit that your child will love. It teaches about the 5 senses and it has everything in it your will need for 50 experiments. (not for kids under 3yrs) Somebody is a game that teaches about the inside of your body. My kids loved to play this and the great thing about it is that it isn't just for little kids, it comes with 4 game boards so you can adapt and make it harder as your children get older.
HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE CURRICULUM for GRADES 1-3My favorite homeschool science curriculum for grades 1-3 is a series called God's Design for Heaven and Earth. There are 11 books in this series so you can spread them out over grades 1 through 3 and you can easily use it to teach several different ages at the same time. Each lesson starts out with you reading a short section and then going on to hands-on activities and experiments. The lessons are short and fun which means the kids like them. The titles include: - Properties of Atoms and Molecules
- Properties of Matter
- Our Planet Earth
- Our Universe
- Our Weather and Water
- The Animal Kingdom
You can supplement the science curriculum for this age group with things like: Solar System Puzzle Balls by Ravensburger. This is a set of 3D puzzles of the planets that your children build - great to supplement a solar system study. Snaptricity - a fun game to learn about your insides. This is a game that teaches about the inside of your body. My kids loved to play this and the great thing about it is that it isn't just for little kids, it comes with 4 game boards so you can adapt and make it harder as your children get older. Snaptricity - for your children that are fascinated by electricity. HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE CURRICULUM for GRADES 4-6A great curriculum series for grades 4-6 is the Christian Kids Series. It is based on a "living books" approach - not typical boring textbook stuff. These books are great for teaching several ages at once and there are hands-on projects and suggested field trips. There are four books in this series, and it will take you one school year for each book (35 lessons per book - 390 pages) so you can use one of the books for third grade or 7th grade - it just depends on your children. Core Science MS-1 This is an all-in-one kit that is great to supplement whatever science books you choose to use. It comes with a full-color 95-page instruction manual for 135 science experiments. It focuses on 45 themes that you will be studying in grades 4-6 like: - mass and volume
- the human body
- chemical reations
- soil analysis
- optics
- rockets
- electricity
- circuits
So as you are studying these things, you have a kit with all the materials, instructions on how to use them and it covers three different levels of learning with easy, moderate, and advanced so you can adjust it to fit your child's needs. Anatomy Puzzles by 4D - these puzzles look just like the anatomy models you see in your doctor's office. They are very detailed and are a great supplement to teaching anatomy.
HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE CURRICULUM for GRADES 7 & 8I recommend, again, the God's Design series for this age group. **Note: you can buy these books separately** There are about 35 lessons per book. Three 45-minute lessons per week will let you complete all three books per year, but you may want to break it up and do one lesson per week plus an experiment day and supplement with something else (game, puzzles, videos, writing science report) a third day. This would let you do one book per year. As always, try and see what works best for your family. God's Design for Chemistry - Properties of Atoms and Molecules. This book covers the periodic table, structures of atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, and modern applications of chemistry. God's Design for the Physical World: Heat and Energy - Inthis book, your children will study electricity, magnetism, light, and sound. God's Design for the Physical World: Machines and Motion - simple machines and the laws of motion. This book has many hands-on experiments. Reaction by The Idea Corp is a fun game to teach the periodic table. Power House Energy Kit by Thames and Kosmos - Comes with a 96-page full-color manual with 70 experiments. With this kit, your child will build 20 different small-scale models, including a house with solar panels, a windmill, greenhouse, and desalination system plus many more. The projects are divided into nine chapters. This is a great supplement or you could turn it into a course of study by itself.
HIGH SCHOOL HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE CURRICULUMApologia - This is the favorite homeschool science curriculum of my children, all the other homeschooled kids I know (I know a lot!), and the moms. This is written by Scientists who are Christians. The kids all say the books are interesting and the work is through, complete, and challenging. Use this curriculum all four years of high school and your kids will definitely get a complete education in science.
