Homeschool Computer Curriculum - Fun and Easy!

Homeschool Computer Curriculum that's both fun and easy?

Yep, it's possible whether you know much about computers or not, you can teach your kids everything they need to know about typing, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Is this really necessary?

I think it is.

To me, our children being computer literate is just as important as all of the other areas of education. Our children will be expected to know their way around computers and be able to use these skills - not just to play the latest and greatest video game - but in business.

homeschool computer curriculum From secretary and receptionist all the way up to CEO, saying you don't know basic computer skills is like saying you can't read.

Not only that, our children aren't expected to know "just" the computer basics, they need to know how to write spreadsheets and put together presentations using PowerPoint.

Whatever your goals are for your children, this knowledge is what it will take for them to be competitive in the job market.

With that said, unless you are an expert in all of these things, you need homeschool computer curriculum that is

  • easy for you to teach
  • easy for your kids to understand
  • fun for them to do

These are my top Homeschool Computer Curriculum choices:

First, your children need to learn how to type. I have used Typing Instructor for Kids and Mavis Beacon Typing. Both of these are CDs that take your kids step by step into learning how to type. Fun games are mixed in as they learn each letter so it doesn't get too boring.

Computer Activities Through the Year by Teacher Created Resources for grades 1-3

This is a workbook that has more than 50 activities in it for your kids to do. It tells you what to do with a lot of detail so you won't have any problem teaching your kids. It's like having computer lesson plans already written for you.

This homeschool computer curriculum will teach your kids to develop skills in word processing, spreadsheets, multimedia presentations, graphic design, and using the Internet. Not only are these computer skills taught, but you can use these newly learned skills with your other subjects.

  • Use powerpoint to show the life cycle of a butterfly
  • Use a spreadsheet for math facts
  • Use graphic design to write a history report
  • Use wordprocessing skills for writing stories

Computer Activities for Middle School by Teacher Created Resources

This is just like the workbook I mentioned above except it is for older kids and is more advanced. Even if your kids didn't start with the first book, they won't have any trouble starting with this book and can probably do it by themselves.

Just like with the Computer Activities Through the Year workbook, you can have your kids use these skills in all of their schoolwork and put together some really impressive reports.

Lifepac Computer Curriculum offers high school level homeschool computer curriculum, but truthfully, if your children use the two workbooks listed above, I don't think they will need it.

Corefx This software teaches graphic design and photo-enhanced artwork that they can animate.

Here are some of the features:

  • Four programs in one - draw, paint, animation, and photo editing
  • 12 natural digital art media effects
  • Simple graphic design tools
  • Wide range of paper textures, brush sizes, tools and colors
  • Work with images from a wide variety of sources
  • Customize tool bars to suit your needs
  • Three level approach makes it great for families

Stop Motion Animation Kit - This software teaches your children movie making. Once your children learn this, they can use it to re-create what they are learning in their other subjects - make a movie about a battle they read about while studying the Civil War - make a movie for a book report - make a movie about a Bible story.

  • Kit includes: Learn Movie Making with Stop Motion Animation book
  • Non-Linear Editor (Software)
  • PC camera
  • sound effects and a sample movie
  • Free Stikfa figure!

Logo Works teaches basic computer programming for those of you who have kids who really get into computers. Unfortunately, mine didn't so I can't say that I used this software. But it's available if you have a child who wants to learn programing.

As you can see, finding homeschool computer curriculum isn't a problem. These that I have mentioned here just scratch the surface, but I know they are good additions to your homeschool and will provide you with computer lesson plans to help you teach.
