Focus Issues

by Jenna Wood
(Moorpark, CA)

My son and I have recently started home-schooling this year. Over the past few months I have noticed him have increasing trouble focusing. He spent his K-3 grades in public school, and frequently wants to take breaks at their normally scheduled time.

When we stop for a break, there are no children to occupy him, and he is frequently distracted by the television and games. When we are 'in session' we have a dedicated work area. Please give me some tips to help maintain some structure! Thanks!

Homeschool Help - Distractions
by: Debbie

Hi Jenna,

Breaks are good. Remember, the great thing about homeschooling is you don't have to 'play' school. It's okay to have breaks. I usually let my kids have breaks between subjects too - it just gives their brains a rest!

If you find your son is playing too many video games, you just need to limit him. Decide on an amount of time for him to play video games or watch TV. Once he's past his limit, that's it. BUT, you have to stick to your guns or he won't pay attention to your time limits.

There have been times when I told my boys no video games or TV was allowed until school was completely over for the day. This encourages them to get their work done faster.

For alternatives to TV and video games, tell him during breaks, he can play things like Legos etc. or go outside (stay in your yard) and play.

Hope this helps!
Debbie
