Teach the Dolch Word List with

Preschool Learning Activities

It isn't difficult to teach the Dolch Word List using preschool learning activities.

By using games and activities that your little guys like, they'll be learning these words before you know it.

Tips for Teaching the Word Lists

To start, print off the word list that is appropriate for your child's age or grade level. Begin by introducing two or three words showing them to your child as you say them.

You can play games with these cards by laying them down face up and asking your child to point to the word that you say.

Dolch Word List Once she has mastered this, tell your child you are going to "hide" the words and lay them face down. Ask them to turn the find the card that says one of the words you are teaching. Let her turn the cards over in whatever order she chooses until she finds the correct word.

Another thing you might want to try is to tape the words for the week at spots in and around your home. For instance, one card on the TV, one on the refrigerator, and one on the bathroom mirror. As your child sees these words throughout the day, ask her if she knows what they say.

As you read to your child during the day (and you should), make a special effort to point out the words that your child is learning. Have her do something special every time you read one of her sight words.

For instance, she could clap three times, stand up and hop three times, run around in a circle and sit back down, etc. By doing this, you are involving your child and making it fun for them to be on the lookout for their special words of the week.

Games

If you would like to make it even more fun for your child to learn these words, play the games listed in the free educational games section. There are instructions to play:

Lulu. This is a fun game for children because your child gets to "feed" Lulu the words they are learning.

Concentration. Withthis game is great to teach matching and word recognition - just don't start out with an overwhelming number of cards for this game.

After your child learns each small group of words, introduce a couple more at a time until he has learned the entire list. This could takes weeks or months depending on your child. Thereisn't a correct or incorrect amount of time to learn these words. Work at a pace that is comfortable and fun for your child.
